The Cut and Shape's Influence on Fashion

Cut and Shape are typically indicators which grade how a diamond has been refined from a rough stone to a faceted gem. Typically, cut judges based on how well the faces are proportioned whereas shape describes the diamond's style.
As such, both factors taken together will provide a sense of identity to the overall piece. In analysing cut, you can see how the brilliance of the diamond caused by the refraction of light from its facets would make the stone sparkle, whereas in shape you could see how the form of the diamond affects modern fashion trends. We will analyse both cut and shape in turn below.
Cut's Influences Personal Preference

Fashion is ultimately relative and reflective of what our society deems to be preferable. For example, the Belle Époque era jewellery from the 19th and 20th Century tended to be more alluring, elaborate and designed primarily to impress others at balls, feasts or other events on offer. They often were cut in a way which was more traditional while set within a unique and eye-catching setting, similar to how one of our bespoke pieces, the peacock brooch, is influenced off of.
Yet, what made the cut special was not merely its shape, which we will look at further below, but rather the way in which it sparkles, shines or interacts with lights. Typically, only round cut diamonds are graded by their cut on a scale of "poor" to "excellent". However, as we saw before, even the smallest of diamonds are unique, and to us what truly makes a good piece would be how the jewellery designer uses diamonds within a jewellery setting to maximise sparkle and enhance its value.
Therefore, to truly find a piece that suits you, examine the piece of jewellery in different light settings and not just within the display case. Check to truly see whether it has the right amount of lustre, and through this, you would find a piece that will make you satisfied.
Shape and Fashion Trends

While the cut of a diamond plays a huge part on how much lustre a diamond gives off through the refraction of light, the shape is the ultimate form in which a diamond takes. There are a variety of different shapes to choose from, ranging from the typical Round shape to the more modern-looking Pear shape. To learn more about the history of these shapes, click here.
Ultimately, shape is something which would influence which piece of jewellery you would want to buy. For a classic and timeless look, you would most likely prefer a Round cut diamond for an engagement ring. For a modern and fashion-forward look, perhaps the Pear or Princess cut would be more her style. Looking for complete clarity and high flashes of brilliance? Then perhaps the Emerald cut to truly show off that centrepiece stone.
The point is that diamonds come in all shapes, sizes and arrangements, so examine the setting, check out its lustre and see how its shape arranges in accordance with the jewellery setting around it. Compare these observations to what kind of look you are looking for in jewellery and this way we guarantee that you will be satisfied with whatever purchase you decide to end up with.
